about

In the rich tapestry of South African music, one name stands tall, transcending time and genres: Prophets of Da City (POC). This iconic hip hop band emerged in the early 1990s, during the tumultuous era of apartheid. Their music was not just a beat; it was a revolution, a message, and a rallying cry for change. POC's unique blend of African rhythms, poignant lyrics, and socially-conscious messages captured the hearts and minds of a nation yearning for freedom and equality. They weren't just musicians; they were activists who used their art to challenge the status quo.
Their influence on South African hip hop is immeasurable. POC paved the way for countless artists to express their truths through music, inspiring future generations to follow in their footsteps. Their socially relevant verses and rhythms continue to resonate with listeners, reminding us of the power of music as a force for change.

As I reflect on the significance of Prophets of Da City, I’m reminded that music transcends borders, connects hearts, and fuels revolutions. Their legacy lives on, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, the power of music to provoke thought, inspire action, and ignite change remains unwavering. In celebrating their legacy as a die hard fan (and also in the spirit of celebrating #HipHop50) I’ve been in the lab remixing some of their classics which forms part of a remix project to be released end Oct 2023. ‘Feel the vibe’ performed by Ishmael Morabe was produced by Shaheen Ariefdien for their 1997 release, Ghetto Code which is available on all digital music platforms.
